How to set creative goals you can actually stick to!

You have endless creative projects and ideas that are constantly being put on the back burning?

Does this sound familiar?

  • You want to write every single day.
  • You want to paint every morning before work
  • You want to practice the piano for 30 minutes every single day.

Those are not goals, those are actions that connect to your bigger goal. Let’s dive into how to set creative goals you can actually stick to.

Stick to your creative goals with daily habits and creative dates

What is your creative goal?

  • Are you wanting to open up an online shop and sell your art.
  • Want to finish 5 paintings by spring?
  • Trying to finish your novel in order to hire an editor?

Get clear on that big picture goal by asking yourself where you see your creative life going. If you could wake up every single day and create something what you would it be? This is your chance to visualize a day in your life as a creative.

Why this goal?

Sit with this idea for a time. Most of use creatives already have a vision for our creative life and if you have multi passions you might have too many to keep track out. How can you possible pick just one goal? Don’t worry, I will get there!

As you work through you vision and start setting goals. I want you to remember that these goals should be big, grand and a little scary but also something you feel in your soul is right. Now, you might not have this soul deep knowing yet so that means you have to play with the idea. You do not need a strict goal to prevent it from escaping. Just allow that idea to bloom a little more.

What scares you about your art?

If you are still struggling to pick a goal for your creative life then start by dissecting what scares you the most. Now, as a multi passionate person who overthinks absolutely everything, doing the scary thing is sometimes not possible. However, I would at least try it but also have another goal that gets you really excited. You can even habit stack the fun exciting goal with the scary goal in order to show up for both of them.

What happens when you accomplish this goal?

Continuing with the visualizations. I want you to take a deep breathe and picture yourself accomplishing that goal, getting the email, acceptance, the sale, the opportunity or whatever it is. You have already achieved it. What does that feel like? Describe, write it down and sit in that moment.

It is already yours.

Stick to your creative goals with daily habits and creative dates:

Once you have a goal in mind it’s time to build your daily habits. For me, I am a published author. In order to get my book published I have to write it and edit it, then query it and go through that process of getting it traditionally published.

That seems overwhelming but it actually isn’t because I have my daily habits set. I edit for at least 30 minutes a day or more. That is my daily habit that I have stuck to for five months and I am making incredible, daily progress.

Depending on your goals, pick a daily task you can do whether it is a focused session or something else to commit too.

Now, as creatives and multi passionates doing the same thing every single day can be a struggle. You need novelty, newness. That’s why you can implement Creative Dates within your week. I recommend at least a couple times of week work on your art just for fun. I include a creative writing session on random story ideas about once a week to help fuel my creativity. I don’t want my daily editing session to feel like a burden. It is meant to be manageable. Of course, there will be days you are tired or annoyed or frustrated but you can be all those things and create art.

Don’t let the moments mood hold you back from building the creative life of you dreams.
